National Pie Day

Did you know that today (23rd January) is National Pie Day? A day to celebrate and enjoy cooking, eating, sharing and talking pies!

A friend of mine recently told her kids about Pie Day, in which their response was ‘oh you mean 3.14159?’ No that’s Pi as in the mathematical equation! We mean PIES, as in Chicken & Mushroom, Steak & Kidney, or Apple!

The Guinness World Record for the most expensive meat pie ever sold goes to the Fence Gate Inn in Lancashire which sold its pie for £8195 – or £1024 a slice on 14th November 2005.

It was made from £500 worth of Japanese wagyu beef fillet, Chinese matsutake mushrooms (which are so precious, they’re harvested under guard), Winter Black truffles, French Bluefoot mushrooms (sold at £200 for 1kg). I wonder if it tasted much different from a normal steak and mushroom pie?

TOP PIE

What’s your favourite pie? The average Brit scoffs a whopping 2,160 pies over their adult lifetime, according to a recent study.

The research, which polled 2,000 adults, found pie enthusiasts consume a huge amount of pastry over the years, at least 36 pies every single year.

It also emerged the nation’s favourite pie is the classic Beef and Ale, but proving we still have a sweet tooth, Apple Pie came in second place.

This was closely followed by Chicken and Mushroom Pie – one of my personal favourites!  And I’m delighted to see the melt-in-your-mouth Chicken, Mushroom and Tarragon Pie features on the China Fleet Specials Board this week in the Brasserie….I guess you know what I’ll be tucking into! Well, it is for research!

See you next week & hope you get to enjoy a pie this week,
